Star Trek Online Causes Overheating

My video card totally burnt up Friday while playing STO!

I had a 4 month old EVGA Geforce GTX 260 Core 216. I have played everything at max settings with no problems since I bought it. Card temperature was 65C under load while playing STO. It was NOT over heating. It started artifacting during STO, then shortly after the card died and caused blue screen errors. It then would not reboot, and had artifacts on the screen in the bios.

I took the card out and installed an old spare one. PC booted up fine. The verdict is that graphics card, optimization, and performance bugs in STO caused my graphics card to redline without any warnings. This damaged the card and caused it to fail.

If you buy Star Trek Online you should be VERY careful. It can destroy your graphics card and possibly more of your PC!

Today I found this post in the STO forums:

Yeah,…there is a bug that will heat some video cards.

Quoted from another forum…..
“If you havent manually set your FPS with /maxfps command; then you are redlining your card without even knowing it. Apparently STO has a huge bug where it sets your GPU to try and attempt an infinite framerate which bottoms it out. Even if you arent running hot you are still doing damage since its redlined. To fix this serious problem log into the game and type /maxfps if it comes up 0.000000 then you have been running redline for days most likely. Just type /maxfps(space)# between 30-60 for fps. Then type just /maxfps to make sure it took.

The /showfps command may still show zero but thats bugged so dont pay attention to it. After you set your maxfps you should notice markably increased performance, less heat if you were running crazy hot like me, and the ability to set more stuff to max if you were unable to before.

LAST TIP VERY IMPORTANT. Dont forget that every time you log in you must set your fps again or it will go back to 0.00000.”

LOLZ WORST BLOG EVER…. you don’t even know what you’re talking about, biggest idiot on the internt, NOOB….

total FAILZ

Umm… buddy… most games do that. You’ve never played a game and done a /fps only to find out that you’re pulling 250+ FPS? You really think that they cap FPS in these games? I’ve played a grand total of ONE game that had capped FPS. Every other game didn’t bother, and just ran the video card at max.

My computer bluescreened three times last night playing STO before I reached into my computer to see if heat was the problem. I have a geforce 8800 GTS that spans two slots and I’ve never had it overheat on me before but it was practically molten. I had the settings on Low too. After I realized it was overheating I turned the settings to Minimum, opened up the side of my case and put a window fan in the side blowing right on the video card to keep it cool. That seemed to kind of work but even then it was still uncomfortably hot.

I will try the max FPS setting tonight, thanks for the tip.

Don’t trust him, his information is based off of speculation, a speculation that was proven wrong by the tech community of STO. he doesn’t know what he is talking about. if you’re card is over heating you need to check for three things.

1, air flow make sure you computer has good airflow, try to tie cables up to keep them away form the main part of the system.

2. check the card itself it could be that the fan is going out.

3. clean the computer, dust kills, clean it.

also if you’re card is over heading that mean there is something defective with the card. the card will slow itself down if it’s getting to hot. if it’s not doing that you need to RMA you’re card, or get a new card.

but no the game is not heating up you’re card, you’re card is heating up you’re card.

From the moment I start to play STO, my 8800GT’s fan spins up to max and I’ve blue screened 3 times while in STO. No other game (e.g., WOW), would ever raise the fan speed like STO. If maxfps setting is not the problem, can someone please let us know what is so we don’t fry our cards? I’m ready to uninstall STO.

George I’m afraid to play the game anymore. I’ve gotten a new card and I do not want to risk it by playing STO. I’ve already canceled by subscription. Its a shame to…I kind enjoyed the space combat.

I to have the same problem, its just STO, with a gtx 285 and tryed with a gtx 260.. Same prob.. and i have a big case with 6 fans its not on my side.. the 260 was new from the shop…

Anyone who says games can’t kill your card don’t know what they are talking about….STO will Redline your card..

Easy fix don’t play for more then an hour at a time..works for me for now but after getting a year long early deal with the game its kind of a pain not to play more then 1h at a time..

The big problem is that they say its nothing on there end… when people played the game fine.. for months.. and then it just started..100s of people … if not more.. all with the same prob. I put a case fan right next to the GPU and will try again tonight … with any luck it will stay below 90C
